Musical Program

As part of Into the Open in Berlin, Shavnabada's repertoire will showcase the musical dialects from various regions of Georgia. The concert will seamlessly blend both simple and intricate Georgian polyphonic pieces, offering a diverse musical experience. The performance will include a rich collection of Georgian music, featuring melismatic compositions, melodious lyrical songs, the Guruli “Krimanchuli“(a distinctive yodeling style), and the resonant tones of age-old traditional instruments, some dating back ten centuries.

The repertoire encompasses traditional Christian and pagan hymns as well as fragments of contemporary Georgian music. Notably, each musical piece in the concert will be introduced with a preface, providing the audience with the stories behind the songs.

In conclusion, the closing concert will feature the world premiere of Ying Wang's "Double Wings" (10 minutes) for 2 cellos and video installation. This composition was specially commissioned for the Into the Open - Music Festival 2024.

About Shavnabada

Established in early 2005, the Folk Ensemble Shavnabada is a major presence in the realm of Georgian polyphonic singing, originating from the vibrant city of Tbilisi, Georgia. Our mission, since inception, has been rooted in the preservation and promotion of Georgian polyphonic singing— recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of humanity's oral intangible heritage in 2001.

Dedicated to breathing life into this cultural treasure, over the years, Shavnabada members have tirelessly sought and resurrected numerous folk masterpieces. Our journey has taken us on expeditions across diverse regions of Georgia, where we uncovered hidden musical pieces and shared these timeless songs both locally and on international stages. Shavnabada has produced over 10 audio albums, featuring a blend of Georgian folk polyphonic music and educational editions of traditional Georgian chants.

Venue

The Kühlhaus Berlin is an industrial monument located in the heart of Berlin in the immediate vicinity of Potsdamer Platz, right next to the Technical Museum Berlin. Built at the turn of the century in 1900, it is now a universal cultural centre that hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year, from readings and concerts to fashion fairs and food markets. The Kühlhaus, with its 6 floors and the Kubus in the middle, provides the ideal setting for our festival and a place where experimentation and reflection are virtually forced upon us. The Kubus makes a wide variety of event formats possible; the musicians can play from hidden galleries, position themselves in the middle like at a boxing match or perform over several floors.
